So today I thought I better start off by sharing with you why & how I went Vegan!
If you have read my About Page you will be aware that I grew up in South Africa – a country that has a massive meat eating culture! It wasn’t until October 2017 that I went Vegan. Like many of you – I contributed to the unnecessary exploitation of sentient beings where I ate their corpses and excretions several times a day, mainly factory farmed animals such as cows, pigs & chickens.
It wasn’t until one day after weeks of begging Dom if we could just go vegetarian! I was nagging him almost every day as I felt my body didn’t actually want to eat anymore meat. Let’s be honest cooking/preparing two different meals every mealtime would have been a bit much after a long day of work!
A typical days eating looked a lot like this:
Breakfast: Bacon & eggs on toast | Creamy Porridge | Beans on Toast [Vegan – YAY!]
Lunch: Tuna Mayonnaise Sandwiches w/ a Side of Crisps | Cheesy/Creamy Pastas | Burgers/Hotdogs & Fries | Chicken & Rice.
Dinner:Steak & Fries | Roasted/Fried Chicken w/ Rice/Pasta & a load of Cheese | Dominoes Thick Base Pepperoni Pizza [often twice a week] | Minimal Veg | Spaghetti Bolognese, etc.
Ok and breathe!!! What the heck were we doing to our bodies? Dom had no intention of giving up his “protein” and neither of us were prepared to cook separate meals, this prolonging my desire to go vegetarian!
One sunny October day in 2017 Dom was outside mowing the lawn and I? I had my fat ass on the sofa and wasn’t feeling too well! I can still remember so vividly Dom pouring me a massive glass of cow’s milk before going out to mow the lawn! (Just for your information – I very rarely drank cow’s milk as I was slightly lactose intolerant – little did I know I wasn’t a baby cow). I found myself getting up off the sofa to pour myself a 2nd huge glass of cow’s milk with literally no explanation as to why I wanted yet another glass of cow’s milk. It was the Universe preparing me for what was to come. Later that day and most likely after I had a long nap – Dom suggested that we watch “What the Health”. After this we watched “Cowspiracy”.
Well… We went Vegan instantly. I was particularly horrified at how badly people are treated in these factory farmed environments, followed by the freaking health hazards of eating animal products and lastly the suffering of farmed animals and the effects that animal agriculture has on our planet!

I found this image on a blog post titled “Cowspiracy Documentary” written by Emma Berry.
As my time being a Vegan continued I was educating myself more everyday on the incredibly torturous lives animals are put through – for the sake of our tastebuds?! My whole mindset changed! All of a sudden I was Vegan for the animals and for our planet. The health benefits I was experiencing was just an added bonus of eating a plant based diet.
I became truly dissatisfied with our education systems and the government for not teaching us better. It’s a royal fucking shame that humans are so greedy that they will sacrifice and exploit everything from sentient beings to our incredible planet just to make a quick buck. If you have watched “What the Health” and “Cowspiracy” you will come to learn that the animal agriculture industry is highly profitable for our governments. The marketing ploys that they use is to lure us into believing that the murder of another sentient being and eating it is important for optimum health – if we choose to not follow this cruel path they say that we will lack the vital proteins and vitamins for a healthy body. When in actual fact is proven otherwise. I call bullshit as I have experienced first hand the magical effects that a Vegan lifestyle has to offer!
Let me get back to the point. We’re taught to eat foods which harm our health, so that we can go to the doctor to get medication (which is yet another very profitable industry for our governments) to combat all the harmful effects of eating such products? I don’t know about you but I felt very let down after learning all of this. It is one heck of a vicious downward cycle captivating those who know no better. It’s totally unjustified as those who are supposed to be guiding us are leading us down a very dark and scary path – one where we have to fight disease and illness at our own expense. We are literally taught to pay for foods that harm our health & then to pay again to get back to better health! I believe we need to be taught what we should be eating to give our body the vital (as well as natural) nutrients and vitamins it needs for us to survive and thrive.
(Please note that I am in no way stating that you should drop all medications for a Vegan diet – you should probably work alongside doctor/nutritionist who can support you while you wean yourself off medications!)
Doesn’t this look a lot better than a bunch of pills though?
It was an absolute no brainer that the exploitation of animals was totally unacceptable and if I wouldn’t consider putting my family and friends through the cruelty that sentient animals have to face – I should in absolutely no way fund the industry with my hard earned money! That meant that I would never again knowingly purchase another product that contains any part of an animal… dairy… eggs… honey… flesh… skin (leather, silk & wool)… to name but a few!
Going Vegan has spiralled out of control in possibly the most positive chain of events I have ever experienced! It links you to every positive path we have been forced to divert in our everyday lives! Such as Alleviating Animal Cruelty, Going Zero-Waste, leading a more Intentional and Conscientious Lifestyle. I will elaborate more on these topics in future posts – so stay tuned for more!
